why have an engagement shoot
Your engagement shoot isn’t just about pretty photos, it’s about
connection, comfort, and creating something meaningful before the
wedding day. Think of it as a relaxed practice run where you get to be yourselves, without the time pressures of the wedding.
It’s a chance for us to get to know each other better and for you both
to see how I work so when your wedding day arrives, everything feels natural and easy. You’ll already know what to expect, how to move together in front of the camera, and most importantly, that you can just relax and enjoy it.
An engagement session also gives you beautiful, professional photos of this exciting chapter in your lives, perfect for save-the-dates, your wedding website, or simply framing at home.
It’s a lovely excuse to spend an hour together somewhere special whether that’s a scenic walk on the beach, a woodland trail, or somewhere in a cityscape.
Most couples tell me after their session that they feel so much more
confident and excited for their wedding photos - and that’s exactly
what it’s about: capturing your connection, naturally and effortlessly,
before the big day.
What to wear
Your engagement shoot is all about feeling like you. There’s no dress code, but here are a few tips to help you look and feel your best:
- Dress comfortably. You’ll be walking, sitting, and moving around, so choose clothes you can easily relax in.
- Coordinate, don’t match. Pick colours that complement each other without being identical - soft neutrals, earthy tones, or pastels photograph beautifully. Or go big and bold - bring your personality to the table!
- Avoid big logos or harsh patterns. They can distract from what really matters: you two and your connection. Also don’t wear your brand new white suede sneakers to the muddy locations...(please!)
- Layer up. A cosy jumper, scarf, or jacket adds texture and flexibility (and keeps you warm if it’s breezy). Trust me, it’s always better to take a layer off than be VISIBLY cold!
- Think about the setting: For beach or forest locations, something flowy or casual fits perfectly. For urban backdrops, go a little dressier or modern. Saying this, there truly isn’t a right or wrong in what you wear - these are just suggestions.
Above all, wear something that makes you feel confident,
comfortable, and truly you.
ABOUT BRINGING DOGS & CHILDREN
I completely understand how much your dog or little ones are part of your story, and if you’d love to include them in your engagement shoot, we absolutely can - with a bit of planning to make
sure it all runs smoothly.
That said, engagement sessions are meant to feel calm, relaxed, and focused on the two of you, a little time away from everyday life to just enjoy being together. Because of that, it’s usually best to only bring along dogs or children if you know they’ll be comfortable, cooperative, and happy in that kind of environment.
And if you’re looking for a true ‘family shoot’ let’s schedule that separately, I offer discounted rates for my clients on those - just ask!
This goes for both kiddos and dogs:
Choose a location they’ll feel relaxed in - quieter spots usually work best (particularly with pups!) Bring treats/snacks, and maybe a favourite toy to help grab their attention when needed. We’ll start with a few family photos, then it’s lovely if someone - family/friend can take them for a little adventure while you enjoy some photos just the two of you.
Including pets or children can make for really special moments but it’s also completely okay to make this session just about the two of you. A peaceful, fun hour together can be such a lovely way to reconnect before the wedding.
LOCATIONS & TRAVEL
Everyone who has a complimentary engagement shoot included in their package will be offered a selection of locations and dates. If none of those work for you, you’re always welcome to suggest an alternative date or location. These may incur an additional travel fee, but I’m always happy to discuss what might be possible.
If you’re adding an engagement shoot separately, the exact travel and location conditions will be outlined in our direct communication.
Engagement shoots must take place before the wedding day, and it’s your responsibility to schedule it. During the summer my availability outside of the listed dates is very limited, so if you have a specific date or time in mind please let me know as early as possible.
