Yorkshire Dales WEDDINGS

The Yorkshire Dales don't need much help to look good. Limestone cliffs, dry stone walls climbing the hillsides and rivers that turn gold in the evening light. For me as a Yorkshire Dales wedding photographer, that means ten minutes outside can give you the photo that ends up on your wall for the next fifty years.

why get married in the Yorkshire Dales?

Because it's a national park, and it shows. The Yorkshire Dales became a national park in 1954 and grew in 2016, and it's full of places you'll recognise from postcards: Malham Cove, the Ribblehead Viaduct and the Three Peaks of Ingleborough, Pen-y-ghent and Whernside. Down in the valleys you've got Wharfedale, Wensleydale and Swaledale, each with its own villages, pubs and stone barns.

It suits couples who'd rather spend their portrait time outside than in front of a flower wall. Rolling fields, old stone and big skies do most of the work for us.

great spots for wedding photos in the Yorkshire Dales

Some of the best spots for wedding photos in the Yorkshire Dales are around Bolton Abbey, with its priory ruins, stepping stones and the River Wharfe. For an adventure session, Malham Cove and the Ribblehead Viaduct give you huge backdrops. And near any Dales venue, a field gate and a dry stone wall at golden hour can be all you need.

  • Bolton Priory ruins: the medieval priory on the Bolton Abbey estate, with part of the church still in use. It's close to the Tithe Barn, so it works for portraits on the day.
  • The stepping stones and the River Wharfe: right by the priory. Perfect for a bit of fun, as long as nobody tries them in heels.
  • Strid Wood: woodland paths along the Wharfe. Lovely and green, but we stay well back from the water at the Strid itself.
  • Malham Cove: a huge limestone cliff that's worth the walk for an adventure session. Proper shoes needed.
  • Ribblehead Viaduct: the railway viaduct with the Three Peaks behind it. Big, dramatic and best on a day with some cloud.

wedding venues in the Yorkshire Dales I've photographed

Wedding venues in the Yorkshire Dales tend to be small, characterful and full of old stone. The one I know well:

Just outside the Dales, near Skipton, I also photograph at the Coniston Hotel and the Tempest Arms. You'll find both on my wedding photographer in Skipton page. Swinton Estate, over in Nidderdale, is on my North Yorkshire wedding photographer page.

small weddings and Adventure sessions in the dales

The Dales are made for small weddings. Do the legal bit at the register office in Skipton or Richmond, then spend a few hours out in the hills with your favourite people. My micro wedding coverage covers up to 30 guests with 2 to 4 hours of photography, which is plenty for a ceremony, a walk and a pub lunch.

Had a register office wedding somewhere else? You can still come out here for an adventure session afterwards, on the day or another day that suits you. Details on Skipton's register office, including arriving by boat, are on my Skipton page.

planning a Dales wedding

A few things worth knowing before you book anything:

01. EXPECT THE WEATHER TO CHANGE

It can be sunny in the valley and blowing a gale on the tops. Have a wet-weather spot sorted and bring layers for portraits.

02. Allow extra time on the lanes

Dales roads are narrow and twisty, and you'll meet tractors. A minibus for guests saves a lot of hassle.

03. Don't rely on phone signal

It can disappear in the valleys, so give your suppliers the timeline and addresses in writing.

04. LEAVE GATES AS YOU FIND THEM

Most of the best views are on working farmland, so we follow the Countryside Code and keep the sheep happy.

FAQ

Can we get married outdoors in the Yorkshire Dales?

Legally, only in the grounds of a venue that's approved for weddings. Plenty of couples sign the legal bit at a register office, then have a celebrant-led ceremony out in the hills. My guide on how to legally get married in the UK explains how it works.

What if it rains?

Then we get moody, misty Dales photos, which are some of my favourites. I bring clear umbrellas and always have a sheltered backup spot in mind.

Can we have photos at Bolton Abbey?

If you're getting married at the Tithe Barn, the priory ruins and the river are close by, so it's easy to fit them in. If you're married elsewhere, we'll check the estate's rules first.

Do you charge for travel to the Dales?

Not for full day weddings. For hourly coverage and micro weddings, travel is charged separately and I'll tell you the cost up front.
