SKIPTON WEDDINGS

Skipton calls itself the gateway to the Dales, and it's a lovely place to start married life. A medieval castle at the top of the High Street, narrowboats on the canal and green hills a few minutes out of town. For me as a wedding photographer in Skipton, that mix is the best bit: a proper town for the legal side of things, and the countryside right there for your photos.

Elena and Marcus's wedding at the Coniston Hotel, just outside town, is a good example.

why get married in SKIPTON?

Because it's a market town with a lot of character packed into a small space. Skipton Castle dates back to 1090 and is one of the most complete medieval castles in England. The Leeds and Liverpool Canal runs right through the middle of town, and the Yorkshire Dales start just to the north.

It's easy for guests to reach too. Skipton is about 27 miles from Leeds, and the station has direct trains to Leeds and up to Lancaster, so plenty of people can leave the car at home.

my favourite spots for wedding photos in SKIPTON

The best spots for wedding photos in Skipton are along the canal, around the castle at the top of the High Street and in the woods behind it. If you're married at the register office, the piazza out front and the canal side at the back are right there, so we can get lovely photos without leaving the building's doorstep.

  • The canal: narrowboats, little bridges and a towpath to wander along. Calm, colourful and very Skipton.
  • The castle and the top of the High Street: old stone and a real sense of history. It's busy on market days, so we'll time it well.
  • The woods behind the castle: green, shady and quiet. Great for a few minutes away from everyone.
  • Your venue's grounds: at the Coniston Hotel, the lake does most of the work for us.

getting married at Skipton Register Office

Skipton Register Office is at Belle Vue Square on Broughton Road, and it's one of the nicest register offices I know of for photos. It sits right next to the canal, and you can even arrive or leave by boat.

  • The Staincliffe Room: for smaller ceremonies, with seats for up to 18 guests.
  • The Belle Vue Suite: an extendable room for up to 108 guests.
  • The Victoria Room: a private room for you and your wedding party before the ceremony.
  • When: ceremonies run Monday to Thursday, on Friday afternoons and at weekends.
  • Photos and confetti: the piazza out front is great for group photos and biodegradable confetti is allowed. Steps at the back take you down to the canal side.

A register office wedding is a perfect fit for my hourly coverage, from £600 for 2 hours. That gives us time for the ceremony, confetti on the piazza, a wander along the canal and a few family photos before you head off to celebrate.

01. Check the market days

Skipton's market runs on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays, and the High Street gets busy. Plan town portraits around it, or embrace the bustle.

02. PARK IN THE RIGHT PLACE

For the register office, there are pay and display car parks on Cavendish Street, and your wedding car can pull up round the back.

03. FANCY ARRIVING BY BOAT?

Sort it early and check the timings with the register office, so the boat and the ceremony line up.

FAQ

Can we really arrive at Skipton Register Office by boat?

Yes! The register office backs onto the canal, and the council says you can arrive or leave by boat. It makes for brilliant photos.

Can we have an outdoor ceremony near Skipton?

Elena and Marcus said their vows by the lake at the Coniston Hotel, and that's the kind of thing that works beautifully around here. For a legal ceremony outside, it needs to be in the grounds of an approved venue. My guide on how to legally get married in the UK explains the rules.

Can our guests throw confetti?

At the register office, yes, as long as it's biodegradable. At a venue, it's worth checking their rules first.

Do you charge for travel to Skipton?

Not for full day weddings. For hourly coverage and micro weddings, travel is charged separately and I'll tell you the cost up front.
