Lancashire WEDDINGS

Lancashire gets overlooked, and honestly, that's its loss. Tudor halls and medieval manors, 16th century barns, the Ribble winding through green valleys and the wild fells of the Forest of Bowland. As a Lancashire wedding photographer based in Preston, this is my home county, and I still find new corners of it that make me stop the car.

why get married in LANCASHIRE?

Because it has more variety than people expect. Preston gives you a city with big Victorian parks on the river. The Ribble Valley and the Forest of Bowland give you rolling countryside and proper hills. Up north there's Lancaster, with its castle on the hill and Morecambe Bay a few miles away. And there's a coastline too, down towards Lytham St Annes.

It's easy to get to. The M6 runs straight through the middle of the county and Preston and Lancaster both sit on the West Coast Main Line, so guests from London, Glasgow or Manchester can be with you in no time. Plenty of Lancashire venues are historic houses with stories behind them, which makes for great backdrops.

my approach to LANCASHIRE wedding photography

I photograph weddings the way they actually happen. I stay in the background for most of the day and let things unfold, then step in with gentle prompts for family groups and a few portraits. You don't need to know how to pose. That's my job.

Being local helps. I know which Lancashire venues have a sunny corner at 7pm, which lanes clog up on a summer Saturday and where to go when it rains (it will rain, it's Lancashire).

More on how I work is on my documentary wedding photography and candid wedding photography pages, and if you love a nostalgic touch, have a look at 35mm film wedding photography. The full breakdown of a day with me is on my full day wedding photography page.

where I photograph across LANCASHIRE

Preston

My home city, with Avenham and Miller Parks on the Ribble, a register office with its own walled garden and some lovely venues just outside town. It's all on my Preston wedding photographer page.

Ribble Valley and Clitheroe

Market towns, old manor houses and the Forest of Bowland on the doorstep, with Pendle Hill watching over it all. Have a look at my Clitheroe and Ribble Valley wedding photographer page.

Lancaster

A castle, a priory, the River Lune and Morecambe Bay sunsets. Everything is on my wedding photographer in Lancaster page.

I also cover the rest of Lancashire, from Chorley to the Fylde coast, and I'm a short drive from the Yorkshire Dales, the Lake District and Cheshire.

LANCASHIRE wedding venues

There are some brilliant wedding venues in Lancashire, from medieval manors to barns with views for miles. The one I've photographed:

small weddings and register office weddings in Lancashire

Small weddings suit Lancashire perfectly. A dozen of your favourite people, a long lunch somewhere old and beautiful, then a wander for photos. My micro wedding coverage is made for up to 30 guests, with 2 to 4 hours for your ceremony, portraits and time together. Looking for small wedding venues in Lancashire? Leighton Hall even has its own micro wedding package.

Most of the county's register office ceremonies are run by Lancashire County Council, which has ceremony rooms in places like Preston, Clitheroe, Lancaster, Chorley and St Annes. Blackpool and Blackburn with Darwen have their own councils and register offices. A few favourites for photos: Preston's walled garden next door, Clitheroe's tower room looking out over the Ribble Valley and the courtyard steps behind Lancaster's Georgian House.

Your day doesn't have to stop when you leave the register office. Lots of couples add an adventure session afterwards, in the Forest of Bowland or up on the fells, either straight away or on another day.

planning your Cheshire wedding

A few things I'd tell any couple getting married in Cheshire:

Brown leather brogue shoes, gold wristwatch, cufflinks, Bleu de Chanel cologne and red tie arranged on a wooden surface.

01. BOOK YOUR REGISTRAR EARLY

If your venue is in Lancashire County Council's area, your registrar comes from them. Venues in Blackpool or Blackburn with Darwen use those councils instead. Either way, you each give notice at least 29 days before, at the register office where you live.

02. Have a wet-weather plan

It's Lancashire. Pick a covered spot for photos at your venue and pack clear umbrellas, then enjoy the moody skies.

03. MIND THE MOTORWAYS

The M6 and M61 can crawl on a Friday afternoon or a bank holiday. Give guests a heads-up and leave some slack in the timeline.

Hair stylist pins a bride's veil in a bright dressing room while a bridesmaid in a burgundy dress watches and a flower bouquet rests nearby.

04. USE THE TRAINS

Preston and Lancaster are both on the West Coast Main Line, which is handy for guests coming from further afield.

FAQ

Do you charge for travel in Lancashire?

Not for full day weddings: travel anywhere in the UK is included. For hourly coverage and micro weddings, travel is charged separately, though in Lancashire it's usually a short hop from Preston.

Are you insured?

Yes, fully. I've got public liability and professional indemnity insurance, and I'm happy to send proof straight to your venue if they ask for it

Can we have our engagement shoot in Lancashire?

Yes! Every full day package includes a complimentary engagement shoot. Avenham Park in Preston, the Forest of Bowland or Williamson Park in Lancaster all make lovely spots.

Can we get married outside in Lancashire?

Yes, as long as it's in the grounds of a venue approved for weddings. Mitton Hall, for example, offers ceremonies in its Walled Garden. My guide on how to legally get married in the UK explains the rules.

What if you haven't photographed at our venue?

That's fine. I always arrive early to get to know the place, and we'll have a pre-wedding meeting to go through your timeline and every little detail.

How long until we get our photos?

You'll get a sneak peek within 5 days. Your full gallery arrives within 6 to 12
weeks, depending on the time of year.
