CONWY Weddings

Conwy looks like it was built for wedding photos. A huge medieval castle at the water's edge, town walls you can still walk along, a suspension bridge with turrets to match and the smallest house in Great Britain sitting on the quay. As a wedding photographer in Conwy, I love that all of that is within a few minutes' walk, with the mountains of Eryri just across the estuary.

why get married in Conwy?

Because the history is right there in front of you. Edward I built Conwy Castle and the town walls between 1283 and 1289, and they're now part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with the walls running in an almost unbroken loop of around 1.3 kilometres round the old town. Inside them is Plas Mawr, an Elizabethan town house from 1576 that you can actually get married in.

It's easy to reach too. Conwy station sits inside the town walls on the North Wales Coast Line, and Llandudno Junction is just across the river. Next door, Llandudno and Deganwy give you a Victorian seaside town and views back across the water to the castle.

my favourite spots for wedding photos in Conwy

The best spots for wedding photos in Conwy are the quay, the town walls, Telford's suspension bridge beside the castle and the shore at Deganwy, looking back across the estuary. They're all close together, so we can fit a few into one portrait break.

  • The quay: boats, the water and the smallest house in Great Britain, all 3 metres by 1.8 metres of it.
  • The town walls: sections you can walk along, with views over the rooftops and the castle.
  • Conwy Suspension Bridge: built by Thomas Telford in 1826, with towers designed to match the castle. It's pedestrian-only now and cared for by the National Trust.
  • Deganwy: across the estuary, with one of the best views of the castle, especially at sunset.
  • Llandudno: the Victorian seafront, the pier and the Great Orme, if you fancy a bit of seaside.

getting married at Plas Mawr or Llandudno Town Hall

Conwy County Borough Council holds its register office ceremonies at Llandudno Town Hall, a few miles from Conwy, and its registrars also lead ceremonies at Plas Mawr.

  • Llandudno Town Hall: the Tudno Room for up to 15 guests, the Conwy Suite for up to 40 and the Assembly Hall for up to 160. There's also a register office room for just the two of you and two witnesses.
  • Plas Mawr: two rooms, the ground-floor hall and the great chamber upstairs, each for up to 40 people including the registrars, the two of you and your photographer. You get up to 90 minutes in the house, with photos in pre-arranged areas.
  • Booking Plas Mawr: check a registrar is free with Conwy council first, then book with the Plas Mawr team. It's closed from November to March.

For a small ceremony like this, my hourly coverage from £600 for 2 hours leaves time for the ceremony, the courtyards and a walk down to the quay.

02. EXPECT VISITORS

Conwy is busy in summer, so we'll plan town photos for quieter times of day where we can.

03. Let guests take the train

Conwy station is right inside the walls, and Llandudno Junction has more connections.

FAQ

Can we get married at Plas Mawr?

Yes. Plas Mawr is licensed for civil ceremonies from April to October, with two rooms for up to 40 people each. Book the registrar with Conwy council first, then the house.

Can we have beach photos at Llandudno?

We can. The seafront is only a short drive from Conwy, and it's lovely in the evening light.

Can we have photos on Conwy's town walls and quay?

Yes. The quay and the area around the walls are right in the middle of town, so they're easy to fit in after your ceremony.

Do you charge for travel to Conwy

Not for full day weddings. For hourly coverage and micro weddings, travel is charged separately and I'll tell you the cost up front.
