Clitheroe WEDDINGS

The Ribble Valley is one of Lancashire's best-kept secrets. Stone villages, old manor houses, the river winding through the fields and the Forest of Bowland rising up behind it all. Clitheroe sits right in the middle, with its little castle on a limestone hill. As a Clitheroe wedding photographer, I love how quickly you can go from a market town street to open countryside here.

why get married in the ribble valley

Because it feels like proper countryside without being miles from anywhere. The Forest of Bowland, one of England's protected landscapes, sits just to the north, and Pendle Hill dominates the skyline to the east. In between are villages, rivers and historic houses that have been hosting celebrations for centuries.

Clitheroe itself is a lovely little market town, known for its independent shops and its castle. The keep dates from the late 12th century and is the second smallest surviving stone keep in England, sitting on a limestone outcrop with views right across the valley.

ribble valley wedding photographer: my favourite spots for photos

As a Ribble Valley wedding photographer, my favourite spots for photos are the castle grounds in Clitheroe, the banks of the River Ribble and the quiet lanes of the Forest of Bowland. Most Ribble Valley venues also have their own gardens and views, so we rarely need to go far.

  • Clitheroe Castle grounds: 16 acres of park around the keep, with terraces, big trees and views over the town.
  • The River Ribble: calm water, stone bridges and soft evening light. Mitton Hall sits right on its banks.
  • The Forest of Bowland: open fells and empty lanes, perfect for an adventure session after the wedding.
  • Pendle Hill: the backdrop to half the valley. Even if we don't climb it, it's lovely to get it in the frame.

  • Parking: on-street, limited to 2 hours outside the library, so tell your guests to allow time to find a space.

01. Watch out for the food festival

Clitheroe hosts a big food festival every August, with over 100 food and drink stalls. Great fun, but the town gets busy, so check the date before you book.

02. Allow time on the lanes

Country roads are narrow and winding, and you'll meet tractors. Build some slack into the timings between ceremony and reception.

03. Sort guest transport

Many venues are tucked away in the countryside, so a minibus or shared taxis save a lot of hassle.

04. Bring LAYERS

Even on a sunny day it can be breezy up near the fells, and you'll want to be comfy for portraits outside.

FAQ

Can we have photos at Clitheroe Castle?

Yes. The castle grounds are a public park, so we can head up for photos with views across the valley. It's busier at weekends, so we'll pick our moment.

Can we do an adventure session in the Forest of Bowland?

I'd love that. It's perfect for a relaxed session after a small wedding or on another day, with big views and hardly anyone around.

Can we get married outdoors in the Ribble Valley?

Only in the grounds of a venue that's approved for weddings. Mitton Hall's Walled Garden is a lovely example. My guide on how to legally get married in the UK explains the rules.

Do you charge for travel to Clitheroe?

Not for full day weddings. For hourly coverage and micro weddings, travel is charged separately and I'll tell you the cost up front.
