Lancaster Weddings

Lancaster is a small city with a big view. There's a castle and a priory on the hill, the River Lune running past the old quay and Morecambe Bay just a few miles away, with the Lake District fells on the horizon. As a wedding photographer in Lancaster, I love that you can get history, water and mountains into one afternoon of photos.

why get married in Lancaster?

Because few places this size pack in so much history. Lancaster Castle stands on the site of a Roman fort and was the scene of the Pendle witch trials in 1612. Lancaster Priory sits right beside it on the hill, and down below the canal and the River Lune wind through the city. Then there's Williamson Park, with the Edwardian Ashton Memorial at the top.

It's easy to reach too. Lancaster station is on the West Coast Main Line, with trains to London, Glasgow, Edinburgh and Manchester, and the Lake District is right on the doorstep for anyone making a long weekend of it.

my favourite spots for wedding photos in Lancaster

The best spots for wedding photos in Lancaster are Williamson Park and the Ashton Memorial, the castle and priory on the hill, the riverside by the Lune and, if you can stretch to it, the shore of Morecambe Bay at sunset. They're all within a short drive of each other, so we can easily fit in two.

  • Williamson Park: 54 acres of woodland around the Ashton Memorial, with views across the bay to the fells.
  • The castle and priory: old stone, steps and archways on Castle Hill. Brilliant for a city feel.
  • The River Lune: the riverside and old quay are lovely in the evening light.
  • Morecambe Bay: about three miles away. If the timing works, a sunset over the bay is hard to beat.

getting married at Lancaster Register Office

Lancaster's register office is in Georgian House, a listed Georgian building at 4 Queen Street, run by Lancashire County Council.

  • The room: a ground-floor ceremony room seating 36 guests, fully accessible.
  • Photos: the courtyard at the back has steps, pillars and greenery, perfect for confetti and family photos.
  • When: ceremonies run seven days a week, with later slots on Fridays and Saturdays.
  • Parking: there's no car park, but there's pay and display on Queen Street and a multi-storey on Common Garden Street, about two minutes' walk away.

For a register office wedding, my hourly coverage from £600 for 2 hours leaves time for the ceremony, the courtyard and a quick trip up to Williamson Park.

planning A LANCASTER WEDDING

01. GET THE ROUTE RIGHT

Queen Street can only be reached by car via Aldcliffe Road, so pass that on to your wedding car driver and guests.

02. PLAN AROUND THE LIGHT

If you want a Morecambe Bay sunset, we'll work backwards from sunset time. In summer that means slipping out after the meal.

03. MAKE A WEEKEND OF IT

With the Lake District so close, lots of guests will want to stay on. Give them a heads-up early.

04. EXPECT HILLS

Lancaster's centre has its fair share of slopes and steps, especially around the castle. Comfy shoes for the walk, nice ones for the photos.

FAQ

Can we have photos in Williamson Park?

Yes. It's a public park with loads of woodland paths and that famous view. If you're married at the Ashton Memorial, it's all right outside the door.

Do you charge for travel to Lancaster?

Not for full day weddings. For hourly coverage and micro weddings, travel is charged separately and I'll tell you the cost up front.

Can we have beach photos at Morecambe Bay?

We can, and at sunset it's magic. The bay has strong tides and quicksand, so we stay on the promenade or safe, firm ground rather than heading out onto the sands.

Do you charge for travel to Clitheroe?

Not for full day weddings. For hourly coverage and micro weddings, travel is charged separately and I'll tell you the cost up front.
