WHY DO COUPLES CHOOSE TO ELOPE?

Eloping has recently become much more popular for a vast variety of reasons! Some of the couples choose it by following their true adventure spirits, some for simplicity and many others! Here are some of the top reasons why couples choose to elope:

  • Intimacy & Authenticity – Elopements allow couples to focus entirely on each other without the pressures of a large guest list.
  • Less Stress, More Freedom – With no rigid timelines or extensive planning, elopements offer the flexibility to create a day that’s truly unique.
  • Budget-Friendly – Without the costs of a large venue, catering for guests, and extensive décor, eloping can be a much more affordable alternative to traditional weddings. Though - elopements can also easily become pricey. Simply because it's just the two of you (or a few with guests), it often provides a great opportunity to splash out on aspects that you really truly love - like having an elopement helicopter flight or a luxury hotel.
  • Adventure & Experience – Many couples opt to elope in breathtaking locations, turning their wedding into an unforgettable adventure.
  • Avoiding Family Expectations – Some couples find that eloping allows them to bypass family drama and focus on their love story without external pressures.

There simply isn't a list of right or wrong reasons why people elope - if you're feeling like that's something you want to do - just go for it!

HOW ARE ELOPEMENTS DIFFERENT FROM TRADITIONAL WEDDINGS?

Elopements differ from traditional weddings in several key ways:

  • Guest List – Most elopements include just the couple, their photographer, and sometimes a small group of loved ones or witnesses. I normally recommend keeping the guest count to around 10 (15 max!) for the best experience - but it's totally up to you! Further down there's a list of some of my recommended venues.
  • Location Flexibility – While traditional weddings often take place in designated venues, elopements offer the freedom to say ‘I do’ anywhere – from remote mountain peaks to charming seaside cliffs. You also can incorporate a venue to it if you'd like - there's plenty of lovely low key small venues that will be able to accommodate your elopements. Some of my favourites
  • Customised Ceremonies – Elopements are highly personal, allowing couples to design their day exactly how they want, with no expectations to follow traditions they don’t connect with. For example you could choose to have a celebrant led ceremony or one that's led by one of your close friends. You also shouldn't feel like you need to have someone leading the ceremony - it can also be just the two of you exchanging vows!
  • Focus on the Couple – Instead of entertaining guests, elopements are all about celebrating the love between two people in an intimate and meaningful way. Of course, if you would like to plan activities and enjoy some time with your guests - you can, but the point is that it's done on your terms rather than what's 'usually expected' from a more traditional wedding.

BEST LOCATIONS TO ELOPE IN THE UK

The UK is home to some of the most stunning landscapes, perfect for an unforgettable elopement. Mind, it also features unexpected weather - it will keep you on your toes regardless of the season! Here are some top locations for couples seeking breathtaking backdrops:

SNOWDONIA, NORTH WALES

Snowdonia is an ideal location for adventurous couples who love the great outdoors. With its rugged mountains, serene lakes, and mystical forests, it offers an incredible variety of backdrops for elopement photography. Some popular elopement spots in Snowdonia include:

  • Llyn Idwal – A serene glacial lake surrounded by dramatic peaks.
  • Cadair Idris – A lesser-known but equally stunning mountain perfect for a secluded ceremony.
  • Fairy Glen – A magical woodland gorge offering an enchanting elopement setting.

LAKE DISTRICT, ENGLAND

For couples seeking a mix of picturesque countryside and dramatic landscapes, the Lake District is a stunning choice. This national park is known for its tranquil lakes, rolling hills, and charming villages. Some of the best elopement locations in the Lake District include:

  • Buttermere – A serene lake surrounded by mountains, offering a peaceful and romantic setting.
  • Helvellyn – One of England’s most famous peaks, perfect for an adventurous mountaintop ceremony.
  • Tarn Hows – A beautiful, easy-to-access location with stunning panoramic views.

SCOTTISH HIGHLANDS

The Scottish Highlands are one of the most iconic places to elope in the UK, known for their wild landscapes, misty mountains, and romantic castles. Some of the best places to elope in the Highlands include:

  • Glencoe – A dramatic valley with jaw-dropping scenery, perfect for cinematic wedding photos.
  • Isle of Skye – With its rugged coastline, fairy pools, and Quiraing mountains, this island is a dream for adventurous couples.
  • Loch Lomond & The Trossachs – A breathtaking mix of lochs, forests, and rolling hills, offering a variety of secluded elopement spots.

One magical elopement I photographed took place in Glencoe and a stunning lakeside location featured in James Bond films. The adventurous couple, traveled with their kids, renting an Airbnb with a hot tub for a touch of luxury and an RV to explore the Highlands. The weather was unbelievably warm and beautiful for April—something rare in Scotland! We took the chairlift to the top of Glencoe, taking in breathtaking views, but the highlight of the day was their intimate lakeside ceremony with an incredible panoramic backdrop. After exchanging vows, they enjoyed a picnic by the water, making the experience even more special. Their elopement was the perfect mix of adventure and family-focused intimacy.

City Elopements in the UK

Not all elopements take place in remote locations—many couples choose the excitement and charm of a city elopement. A registry office ceremony followed by stunning urban wedding photography is a great way to elope while embracing the energy and culture of a city. Some of the most picturesque cities for an elopement in the UK include:

  • Edinburgh – With its historic Old Town, castle views, and Arthur’s Seat for a scenic escape.
  • Leeds – A blend of modern cityscapes and historic architecture, with stunning locations like the Leeds Corn Exchange and Kirkstall Abbey providing unique backdrops for wedding photography.
  • London – Iconic landmarks like St. Paul’s Cathedral, Tower Bridge, and charming hidden gardens make for breathtaking wedding photos.
  • York – Cobbled streets, medieval architecture, and the stunning York Minster create a romantic city elopement backdrop.
  • Bath – Famous for its Georgian architecture and Roman Baths, this city offers a timeless elegance for elopements.
  • Liverpool – A vibrant waterfront, historic docks, and unique urban backdrops add character to city elopements.

PLANNING YOUR PERFECT ELOPEMENT

If you're considering eloping, here are a few steps to help make your day magical:

  • Choose Your Destination – Decide on a location that speaks to you as a couple, whether it's a mountain, a forest, or a coastal cliffside.
  • Check the Legalities – Each country has different marriage laws, so be sure to research requirements for marriage licenses and officiants.
  • Hire an Elopement Photographer – Capture every beautiful moment with a photographer who specializes in elopements and adventure weddings.
  • Plan Your Ceremony – Decide whether you want a simple vow exchange or something more elaborate with meaningful rituals.
  • Sort Out Accommodation & Travel – If you're traveling for your elopement, book your stay and transportation in advance to ensure a seamless experience.
  • Add Personal Touches – From writing your own vows to including meaningful elements, make sure your elopement reflects your unique love story.
