If you’re planning a small, relaxed wedding in Cumbria, Carlisle Register Office is a brilliant option. It’s ideal for couples who want something simple, meaningful, and stress-free, whether that’s just the two of you or a handful of your favourite people. I photograph a lot of registry office and micro-weddings across the North West, and Carlisle is one I’m often asked about. This guide covers what the ceremony is like, guest numbers, photography tips, and how to make the most of your day.
Where is Carlisle Register Office?
Carlisle Register Office is located at Lady Gildford’s House on Petteril Bank Road, just outside Carlisle city centre.
It’s a historic building with gardens around it, which makes it feel a little more special than a standard town-centre office. You’re not right in the middle of busy streets, and there’s space outside to pause, breathe, and take photos after the ceremony.
Address for reference: Lady Gildford’s House, Petteril Bank Road, Carlisle, CA1 3AJ.
Ceremony options: Indoor or outdoor
Indoor ceremony room
The indoor ceremony room is inside Lady Gildford’s House and has a very classic feel.
You can expect:
- Wood-panelled walls
- A fireplace (though I've not seen it turned on!) and glass windows
- Natural light during the day
The room can hold up to 60 guests, which makes it suitable for small to mid-sized weddings.
This option works well year-round and is the most predictable choice if you’re planning well in advance.
Garden gazebo ceremonies
If you’re drawn to the idea of getting married outside, Carlisle Register Office also offers ceremonies in the garden gazebo. This is quite an unusual option for register offices so definitely makes it a high contender for those who want to save on getting an outdoor wedding venue!
A few important things to know:
- Outdoor ceremonies are generally recommended between late April and mid September
- They are available on Saturdays and Sundays
- The gazebo holds a maximum of 28 people & well behaved dogs!
Because it’s outdoors, ceremonies are weather dependent.
What the ceremony itself is like
Ceremonies here are civil ceremonies, so they follow the legal structure required in England and Wales.
In practice, that means your ceremony will last 10-20 minutes depending on if you're having readings, personal vows etc. In my experience the registrars here are pretty quick in how they perform the ceremonies - so although they are absolutely lovely, it's a quite 'swift' ceremony.
This registry office is really a perfect choice for a 2+2 ceremony (you two and two witnesses) or a micro wedding with just your nearest and dearest. Most of my couples who choose to get married there will do the ceremony + photos there before heading off for a celebration meal elsewhere.
how much does it cost?
Well, as register offices go Carlisle Register Office is well priced in my opinion. Getting married here is less expensive than at their alternative location in Cockermouth Town Hall (in Civic Hall) but actually very similar in price when comparing to Manchester Heron House Register Office. Prices from January 2026 directly from their website.
Combining a Carlisle Register Office wedding with an adventure session
One of the biggest advantages of getting married at Carlisle Register Office is its location. You’re close to open countryside and within easy reach of the Lake District, which makes it a great option if you want to combine your legal ceremony with something more adventurous.
Many couples choose to keep their ceremony simple and structured, then head out for portraits somewhere meaningful afterwards. This can be on the same day or on a separate day, depending on timing, weather, and energy levels.
Popular adventure session options nearby
Some couples stay close and head out for an hour or two. Others make a full day of it and treat the adventure session as part of their wedding experience. Some of my favourite areas to visit:
- Ullswater - look at Aira Force waterfall
- Derwentwater - look at Surprise View gentle hike and surrounding woodland
- Blea Tarn - stunning and remote
- Rydal Caves - scenic hike with caves
Or you could head in the other direction and aim for Kielder, Walton Quarry Country park or use this office as a start of a road trip to Scotland and have your adventure session in the Highlands!
What to wear for an adventure session
Most couples keep things simple and practical:
- Wedding outfits with walking boots
- A second outfit that’s easier to move in
- Layers for wind and temperature changes
Comfort matters more than tradition here, especially if you’re heading into the hills or along the lakeshore.
If you’re thinking about combining a registry office ceremony with an adventure session, it’s worth planning both parts together rather than treating them separately. That way, timings, travel, and energy levels all make sense, and the day feels relaxed rather than rushed.
