Why You Should Have an Engagement Shoot

An engagement shoot is more than just a pre-wedding photoshoot—it’s a chance to celebrate your love story, get comfortable in front of the camera, and create memories before your big day. Here’s why an engagement session is totally worth it:

  • Feel at ease with your photographer: If you’re camera-shy, this is the perfect way to shake off those nerves before your wedding and get used to being in front of your photographers' lens.
  • Capture your relationship in a relaxed setting: No wedding-day stress, just the two of you having fun!
  • Personalised save-the-date or wedding invitations: Many couples use engagement photos for their wedding stationery, wedding websites, and social media announcements.
  • A chance to explore dreamy locations: Whether it’s the mountains, a forest, or the beach, engagement shoots allow you to pick a location that reflects your relationship.

Best Locations for an Engagement Shoot

Choosing the right location is key to making your engagement photos look stunning. Here are some of the best engagement shoot locations, based on my availability and travel schedule for 2025:

1. Blea Tarn, Lake District

A breathtaking location in the Lake District, perfect for couples who love nature and adventure. The walk is relatively easy, with stunning views of the tarn and surrounding mountains. Reflections on the water add a magical touch.

📍 Best for: Couples who want dramatic landscapes and a bit of an adventure.

👟 Tip: Boots are a must! The terrain can be a bit muddy.

2. Formby Beach, Merseyside

A dreamy combination of golden sand dunes, sea views, and a stunning pine forest. The wide, open beach is perfect for romantic strolls, barefoot walks, and dreamy sunset shots.

📍 Best for: Beach lovers and those who want a variety of scenery in their shoot.

👟 Tip: Be prepared for a little bit of sand—it’s worth it!

3. Calf Hey Reservoir, Rossendale

A quiet, scenic location surrounded by lush greenery and rolling hills. It’s an ideal setting for a peaceful, intimate engagement shoot. If you don’t mind getting your boots a little muddy, the off-track paths offer some of the best views.

📍 Best for: Couples who love tranquil, natural backdrops, easily accessible with a car (& wheelchair accessible path)

👟 Tip: Bring boots if you want to explore beyond the main paths.

4. Tatton Park, Cheshire

A classic Cheshire engagement location with beautiful lakeside views, parkland, and the possibility of spotting deer in the background.

📍 Best for: Couples looking for a relaxed outdoor setting.

💰 Tip: Free street parking is available just outside the main entrance or you can pay at the park. Afterwards head into the Tatton Gardens for a full day out experience.

5. Scottish Highlands

For adventurous couples looking for something truly epic, I’ll be available for an engagement shoot in the Scottish Highlands. Expect moor walks, dramatic landscapes, and some light hiking for jaw-dropping scenery.

📍 Best for:Adventurous couples who want unforgettable backdrops.

👟 Tip: Layers. waterproofs and comfy hiking boots are a must! Adventurous spirit is advised.

What to Wear for Your Engagement Shoot

Your outfit choices can make a big difference in how your engagement photos look and feel. Here are my top recommendations:

General Tips

✔ Wear something you feel comfortable and confident in.

✔ Stick to neutral or earthy tones for a timeless look.

✔ Avoid clashing patterns and overly bright colors.

✔ Layers work great for variety—bring a jacket or scarf for extra texture.

✔ Shoes matter! Most locations involve a bit of walking, so wear something practical.

  • Textured jumpers, shirts, and smart-casual layers work great.
  • Plain overcoats or jackets add a stylish touch.
  • Jeans or chinos in neutral tones always look great.
  • Flowy dresses work beautifully, especially in natural landscapes.
  • Cozy knitwear or a classic coat for colder months.
  • Avoid anything too restrictive—you’ll want to move comfortably.
  • Coordinate, but don’t match exactly—complementary colors work best.
  • If in doubt, bring a second outfit for variety!

CAN WE BRING OUR DOG?

Absolutely! If your dog is well-behaved and can relax during the shoot, I’d love to have them along. Just make sure they’re comfortable in the environment, and bring treats or a toy to keep them happy. If you have a reactive dog or you're unsure how it's going to handle being in a different environment/ with strangers etc. maybe consider leaving them behind to ensure you can have a stress-free experience.

Can We Include Our Kids?

Engagement shoots are usually just about the two of you, but if you’d like to include your kids, we can discuss the best way to incorporate them, depending on their ages.

In some cases, a separate family session might be a better option. Please check with me before booking so that I can ensure I can offer you the best service possible.

Final Tips for a Perfect Engagement Shoot

✔ Choose a location that feels special to you—whether it’s a place you love or somewhere that fits your dream aesthetic.

✔ Trust your photographer—I’ll guide you through natural poses and moments so you don’t have to stress.

✔ Don’t stress about the weather—Some of the most magical photos happen in unexpected conditions.

✔ Enjoy the experience! Engagement shoots are about capturing your connection, so focus on each other and have fun.
